NSN Press Release:

Three major Indonesian Universities, Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB), Institute of Technology Supuluh Nopember Surabaya (ITS) and University of Indonesia (UI) have entered into a partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks to foster the development of engineering talent for the global telecom industry.

Under its University Cooperation Program, the company will provide financial assistance, training, and hands on experience to students to prepare them for current and future industry needs.

A highlight of the program is the focus on women students under the ‘Women in Technology’ initiative, underscoring Nokia Siemens Networks commitment to promoting diversity both within and outside the work environment. Access to quality education is also an important and integral element of Nokia Siemens Networks corporate social responsibility programme.

Discussing the University program, Adang Suwandi, Dean of Engineering at ITB said,“To ensure that education fosters real opportunities, it is important that what we teach reflects market needs. In addition, students must gain a holistic learning experience, which combines theoretical knowledge, with practical experience. The right kind of involvement of the corporate sector can make a big difference in preparing deserving students for a better future.”

ICT Minister Muhammad Nuh at ICT Outlook 2008 earlier this year said Indonesia’s telecommunications sector grew 48% in 2007, with the growth of cellular and fixed wireless telecommunications reaching 51% and 78%, respectively. However, a previous report from the ICT Ministry showed that in 2008 the gap of human resources’ supply and demand in the country’s ICT sector was estimated to reach 165%. The situation highlights the need for the government and private sectors to pay closer attention to the development of ICT education at Indonesian universities.

Commenting on the program, Arjun Trivedi, Head of Indonesia, Nokia Siemens Networks said, “The right education lays the foundation of future success. We aim to contribute to the development and diversity of the Indonesian telecom industry, and to its economy. We are confident that this will serve as a channel for dialogue between the academic community and the business world.”

The University Cooperation Program comprises six specific initiatives. These include Scholarships, Internships, Women in Technology, Teacher Training, Web Based Training and Guest Speaker Series.

Financial Assistance

Under the scholarship initiative, Nokia Siemens Networks Indonesia will provide financial assistance to five students who are currently enrolled and have completed the first year of the electrical engineering course. The funds will be provided directly to the university, and will be allocated towards tuition, education material, books and research fees.

Training

To facilitate learning about mobile networks, three web based training modules will be roll out in each university. The trainings will be easy to access, animated and interactive; and will focus on GSM (Global Systems for Mobile), UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) and HSDPA (High Speed Data Packet Access).

The training modules will also be open to one teacher in each university. In addition, under the Guest Speaker Series, experts from Nokia Siemens Networks will visit these universities regularly to impart knowledge on industry and technologies.

Real Life Exposure

Under the Internship program, up to 10 students from each university, enrolled in electrical and informatics engineering will have the opportunity to gain practical experience at Nokia Siemens Networks Indonesia. In addition, under the Women in Technology Program, one female student from each university will be recognized for her outstanding achievement and provided the opportunity to visit the Nokia Siemens Networks Global R&D Center in Helsinki. These programs are applicable to students of the 2008 batch.
