Get Ready, BWA Tender Will Be Started Soon
Minister of Communication and Information Technology Indonesia, M. Nuh, on last Monday (Jan 19th) has signed 2 minister rules and 2 minister decrees about the management and the usage of radio frequency for broadband wireless access (BWA)as well as the selection preparation for local fixed network operator with packet switched based at the 2.3GHz radio frequency.
The decrees consist of spectrum frequency management in 2.3GHz and 3.3GHz. Both spectrum will be used for broadband wireless access. For your information, currently there are several service providers who have used BWA in band 3.4-3.6 GHz, hence they will migrate to 3.3GHz.
These decrees have been waiting for a long time by stakeholder who are interested in wireless broadband. The discussion for BWA management has been started since April 2006. It takes almost 3 years to finalize it. Regulator said that the problems around BWA are quite complicated and it has a strategic impact. So they have to be careful.
Broadband wireless spectrum frequency management is waited for several reasons. BWA will be used as an alternative to reducing the digital divide in Indonesia. So that the internet access will be available in countrywide with affordable tariff. This will have a domino effect which open the opportunity in many areas such manufacturing, applications and contents. This will lead to higher competition which result in efficient telecommunication system.
The most important point of the decree is the statement that there will be a selection of service providers for broadband wireless access. The opportunity will be given to telecommunication network provider or telecommunication service provider. And the selection shall be done in 3 (three) months.
So, Indonesia will release broadband wireless access license soon.
