BWA Tender Info (2) – Bands & Specification

There are several bands that are allocated for broadband usage in Indonesia. These are the bands.

1. Band 287 – 294 MHz and 310 – 324 MHz
2. Band 1428 – 1522 MHz
3. Band 2053 – 2083 MHz
4. Band 2300 – 2400 MHz 42
5. Band 3300 – 3400 MHz 46
6. Band 3400 – 3600 MHz 59
7. Band 10150 – 10300 MHz & 10500 – 10650 MHz

However, only 1 block of 15MHZ (2375 – 2390MHz) will be auctioned in the first stage, around April this year. Other blocks will be auctioned in a later time. (more…)

BWA Tender Info – Regions (1)

Since I wrote down about Broadband Wireless Access in Indonesia last year, several emails have been received asking about the BWA tender in Indonesia.  Many foreign readers have difficulties when they have to read BWA White Paper as it is written in Indonesian. To help those people I tried to summarized several ideas in that paper and write it down here. It will be posted in several articles. Hopefully this will be useful.

There will be 15 regions in BWA tender as showed on the map below. This information is an updated one, as previously I wrote only 14 regions. (more…)

HCPT 2008 Report

The Hutchison Telecommunication International Limited just released the complete report for the financial year 2008 for all of the company in the group, including the PT. Hutchison CP Telecommunications (‘HCPT’) Indonesia. The main points are: — Customer base more than doubled to 4,501,000, while  — Accelerated network expansion with over 6,300 base stations on-air. Complete report is as below.

The Group’s Indonesian operation PT. Hutchison CP Telecommunications (‘HCPT’) continued to report good progress in its second year of operation despite a very challenging environment. Total customer base grew over 120% yearly on the back of accelerated network expansion across the country, strong branding and an effective distribution system. HCPT ended the year 2008 with more than 6,300 base stations on-air covering over 67% of the total population and all major cities in the country. It expects to increase the size of its networks to over 9,000 base stations by the end of 2009. HCPT is looking to maintain strong customer acquisition in 2009 in line with its expanded coverage. The Struggle of New Entries in Cellular Business in Indonesia (2)

On previous posting, it has been written the first reason why incumbents operator have several advantages in cellular businesses in Indonesia. The second reason is the entry time of the new comers. All new comers were started their business when the incumbents have a established network. So, they were too late.

The impact of the late entry time are:

1. New users will be protested about coverage limitation. This leads to unhappy users and back to incumbent operators.

2. Most new users who join the new comers are in low economic level who just have very low budget for their communication need. Middle or high economic level who spend high communication cost already have their mobile number. They already received good communication services from incumbent operators so they will keep their mobile number. (more…)
